The Haworths

The Haworths were a family who lived between Doncaster, Yorks and East Retford, Notts, in the 18th century. Around the beginning of the 19th century, some of them moved to Hull.

Francis Haworth, bap. 13 Jul 1752 in Doncaster, married by licence in East Retford on 29 October 1781 Mary Hunt (possibly born to Thomas and Elizabeth Hunt in Barnby in the Willows, Notts, bap. 10 November 1759).

Their children were Stephen Rose Haworth, bap. 6 September 1782, and Caroline, bap. 24 January 1784. They married a Lockwood sister and brother. Stephen married by licence Elizabeth Lockwood in the parish church of Gamston, Notts, on 18 June 1814. Their son James King Haworth was bap. in Gamston on 12 July 1816. Shortly afterwards, Elizabeth died, and Stephen married Elizabeth Rocliffe and raised a large family. Caroline married Thomas Lockwood by licence in the parish church, Gamston, on 20 February 1806, with witnesses M Hurst and Wm Lockwood.

Francis Haworth died in Humber St Hull and was buried from St Mary's on 29 May 1818, aged 66 years. His widow Mary was buried from the same church on 13 September 1826, aged 66 years.

Francis Haworth seems at one stage to have been an upholsterer in Doncaster. He had a brother Thomas (described as a chinaman and a carpenter) with whom he engaged in land dealing. At his burial, he was described as "gentleman".

Francis's parents were Francis Haworth and Elizabeth Brook(s), married in Doncaster on 29 Jun 1751. The parents of this Francis were Francis Haworth (of Blyth) and Catherine Rose, who was bap. 11 November 1702 in East Retford, dau. of Stephen and Mary. They were married at Babworth 6 January 1721-2 by licence.
